Lotería de Navidad: on December 22, Spain stops for the draw. You can hear it on the radio and on TV.

El Gordo = the jackpot / the biggest prize (in English: the main prize). You say: "Ha tocado el Gordo en…"

Décimo (20 €) = 1/10 of the ticket. 10 décimos = one full ticket (200 €). It’s shared with friends or at work. In English you could say: "a share of a ticket".

Participación = a smaller part than a décimo (a smaller share of the ticket). Useful for sharing without spending too much.

Useful verbs: tocar (Me tocó/No me tocó = I won / I didn’t win), compartir (to share), comprar (to buy), comprobar (to check).

Phrases: ¿Te ha tocado algo? = Did you win anything? ¡Nos ha tocado! = We’ve won! ¡Qué suerte! = How lucky! / What luck!

More phrases: Tocar el Gordo = to hit the jackpot / win the top prize. Nos cayó un pellizco = we won a little bit (a small prize).

Terminación = the last digits of the number. Many people look for their favorite ending (7, 13…). In Spain this is something people talk about a lot.

Where you buy it: in a "administración de lotería" (lottery shop/office). There are long queues in autumn. You can also buy it online. Tip: keep your décimo safe and take a photo of it, just in case.
