How to talk about the length of your driving lessons: "llevar + gerundio" and "hace + tiempo + que". Key patterns in Spain for actions that are still continuing in the present.

Pattern 1: "llevar + gerundio". "Llevo X tiempo haciendo…". Example: "Llevo tres meses yendo a la autoescuela." (in English: "I’ve been going to driving school for three months").

Pattern 2: "Hace + tiempo + que + presente". Example: "Hace dos semanas que tengo clases de conducir." It’s equivalent to "llevar + gerundio".

"Desde hace + período" = "for this amount of time (up to now)". Example: "Tengo clases desde hace dos semanas." Duration that continues up to now.

Negation: "Hace un mes que no conduzco." = "No conduzco desde hace un mes." (in Spanish, "no" is placed before the verb).

Peninsular equivalence: "Hace + tiempo + que + presente" = "Llevar + tiempo + gerundio". "Voy … hace tres meses" is not the preferred form in Spain; "desde 2023" gives a starting point, not the length of time.
Both in "llevar + gerundio" and in "Hace + tiempo + que" we’re talking about an action that is still continuing now.
