In Spain, the type of container tells you what and how much you’re buying. Learn 5 key supermarket words. (For English speakers: thinking of it as “type of packaging” really helps.)
un paquete (de) = a packet / a bag. E.g.: un paquete de pasta; de arroz.
un bote (de) = a jar / a tub / a container. E.g.: un bote de tomate frito; de aceitunas.
una lata (de) = a can (tin can). E.g.: una lata de atún; de sardinas.
una bandeja (de) = a tray / a plastic tray. E.g.: una bandeja de pollo; de fruta.
una barra (de) = a loaf (baguette-style). E.g.: una barra de pan.
Rule: container + de + product. E.g.: una lata de atún; un bote de aceitunas; una bandeja de pollo.
Common phrases in Spain: “¿A cuánto está el kilo?” (“How much is it per kilo?”) “La segunda unidad al 70%” (“The second one 70% off”). “Paquete”, “bandeja” and “bote” are types of packaging; “barra” is used for bread.
At the bakery: “Póngame una barra bien cocida, por favor” (“Give me a well‑baked loaf, please”).
