Hints for this Quiz

Think of the pattern: tener + síntoma (tener + noun).
In Spanish, symptoms are usually expressed with tener: tener fiebre / tos / gripe / náuseas. This is a basic A1–A2 pattern.
Remember: “tos” is a noun; it goes with tener.
For “cough” it’s typical to use tener: tengo/tiene tos. In spoken language people also often specify “tos seca”.
Think of a short, neutral phrase for “feeling unwell”.
A neutral way to say “I feel unwell” is “Me encuentro mal”. In Spain, in everyday speech people also often say “estoy malo”.
It’s a colloquial way in Spain to talk about a mild discomfort.
“Estar pachucho” is a typical colloquial Spanish expression meaning “to be a bit ill / not feel great” (a mild discomfort).
Remember: enfermedad + tener (not estar).
Diseases and many symptoms go with tener: tener gripe, tener fiebre. “Estoy gripe” is incorrect.
Think: it’s a colloquial adjective, and it goes with the verb estar.
In everyday speech in Spain, for a mild, not very serious discomfort people say “estar pachucho/a”. It’s an adjective, so it goes with estar.
Pattern: tener + náuseas.
With nausea we also use tener: tener náuseas. In A1–A2 course dialogues this is exactly how it’s said.
Ser vs estar: for a temporary health state we use estar.
In Spain, in informal speech “estar malo” = “to be ill, to be unwell”. “Ser malo” changes the meaning (it becomes a characteristic), and “estoy fiebre” is incorrect.
