Regla de oro: en oficinas públicas, empieza con usted. Ej.: "Buenos días, ¿Me podría decir…?" (very polite)
Si te tutean, puedes pasar a tú. A veces dirán: "Por favor, tutéame/trátame de tú". Respuesta: "Vale, como quieras".
En tiendas/cafeterías, el tú es común con gente joven. Allí oirás: "¿Qué te pongo?" (informal). En ventanilla, mejor usted.
Formas para preguntar: • Muy formal: ¿Me podría decir…? • Formal: ¿Me puede decir…? • Informal: ¿Me puedes decir…? (tú)
Ojo con el verbo: USTED = 3ª persona. "¿Puede/Podría indicarme…?" TÚ = 2ª persona. "¿Puedes indicarme…?" "Por favor" y "gracias" siempre ayudan.

In administrative contexts, a polite, formal register is expected. The structure with the conditional ("¿Me podría…?") sounds maximally respectful. See the notes about formal address at service counters and the use of the conditional as a courtesy form.
Think about where the "usted" form is implied and where it’s a good idea to use the conditional to sound more polite.
Te dicen: «Por favor, tutéame». ¿Qué haces?
Pasas a tú y respondes: «Vale, como quieras».
Sigues con usted siempre.
Te enfadas y no hablas.
In Spain people sometimes ask you to switch to "tú" to reduce social distance. A normal reaction is to agree ("Vale, como quieras") and use "tú" from that point on.

"¿Me puede…?" keeps the "usted" form and sounds appropriate at a service counter (semi‑formal/formal). "¿Me podrías…?" and "¿Me puedes…?" use "tú" and are more informal. A realistic example at a counter is: "¿Me puede decir si falta algo…?"
Look for the form with "usted" that sounds polite without being excessively ceremonial.
