¿Desde cuándo esperas y cuánto queda? Llevar, hacer, desde hace, quedar

¿Desde cuándo esperas? ¿Cuánto falta? Say how long something has been happening and how much time is left with "llevar", "hace que", "desde hace" and "quedar".

Llevar + tiempo + gerundio = an action that is still continuing. E.g.: "Llevo 3 semanas esperando la cita" (En: "I’ve already been waiting for the appointment for 3 weeks").

Hace + tiempo + que + presente = duration. E.g.: "Hace 3 semanas que espero la cita" (En: "It’s already been 3 weeks that I’ve been waiting for the appointment").

Desde hace + tiempo + presente = same idea. E.g.: "Espero la cita desde hace 3 semanas" (En: "I’ve been waiting for the appointment for 3 weeks").

Hace + tiempo + que + pretérito = time passed since a finished action. E.g.: "Hace un mes que presenté los documentos" (En: "I submitted the documents a month ago").

Quedar + tiempo = the time remaining. E.g.: "Quedan 20 minutos para que abra la oficina" (En: "There are 20 minutes left until the office opens").

En trámites: "Llevo 2 horas en la cola". "Hace un mes que pedí la cita". "Quedan 5 números por delante". (Vocab: cola = queue / line).

Avoid this mistake: × "Espero desde 2 semanas". Say: ✓ "Espero desde hace 2 semanas" or ✓ "Llevo 2 semanas esperando".

To complain without sounding rude: "La verdad es que llevo esperando bastante". Also: "Mire, llevo 40 minutos esperando". Useful at a service window (ventanilla).
